The "Rest" Of The Story

I fell asleep on the couch last night.  I fell asleep several times, in fact.  There was the little snooze I took during what would normally be considered Prime Time viewing.  Then I dozed off again in the middle of my late night television session.  I woke up some time during the very, very wee hours and thought to myself, "Gosh, I really should probably consider shutting off the TV, lights and computer.  Then I should maybe wander off in the general direction of my bed.  I don't want to be the kind of person who sleeps on the couch.  That just seems sad..."

The next thing I remember, it was 7:00 in the morning.  I awoke to the voice of a nice man on the TV reminding me that today was the day I needed to join my fellow Daylight Savers and set my clocks ahead.  I'd slept the night away on the couch with the TV still blaring and the lights still blazing.

The cats seemed to find this perplexing, but were grateful for the fact that I was in closer proximity to the food bowls than is usual.  They must have enjoyed watching me stagger into the kitchen to pour out their carefully measured morning sustenance without all those pesky extra steps.

I suppose we can blame the codeine for some of this.  Although, I have to admit that several days on the stuff has left me a little less susceptible to its effects.  But I've still found myself resting at a level not seen since before I got sick.  Which was a month ago.  A whole stupid month of sniffling, hacking, sneezing and wheezing.  And not sleeping very well.  To make matters worse, I spent the whole time on alert for pneumonia symptoms and I missed the raging sinus infection wreaking havoc in my noggin.  The narcotic beverage my doctor prescribes for me contains a delightful antihistamine.  I normally can't take those for very long due to the horrific jitters they give me, but this stuff overrides any and all desire to move about at night.  I'm like a log.  A big, drooling log...

I needed the rest.  I may be one of the pathetic people sleeping on the couch because I can't see the point of walking the short distance to my bed, but I am rested.  I suppose that is a fair trade-off.

The other thing about narcotic cough medication is that, before the coma kicks in, I can do stuff.  Not drive or anything...that would be kind of dicey.  (Especially since I just got a ticket last week and probably should avoid any further moving violations for the time being)  I had a more productive weekend than you might think, given the circumstances.  Narcotics make doing the mundane stuff more bearable, you see.

I knit quite a bit of sock cuff while catching up on some missed television.  (Thank you, Hulu!)  I cooked up a bunch of eggs for this week's breakfasts as well as some brownies and rolls.  The dishwasher has been pressed into service and two loads of dirty cutlery are no longer rattling around in my sink.  I vacuumed, but didn't quite get to the carpet shampooing.  I really meant to do that since the weather was warm enough to keep the windows open.  But that didn't seem like the sort of thing a resting person should be doing so I let it go.

Once the codeine started to kick in with more of an insistent sort of effect, I needed to sit down.  But I managed to sit at the spinning wheel and finish off a bobbin of merino before the siren song of frozen pepperoni pizza and a nap became too much to resist:

Narcotic Singles.  I think that would be a cool colorway.  If this had actual color in it...

Heck, I even sat down and paid a few bills once the napping was done.  I think it will be interesting to see how my math is going to hold up on that little venture.  For all I know I just bankrupted The Sheepish Financial Empire with my rampant paying of slightly overdue bills with slightly postdated checks.  I like a little adventure and excitement with my resting, don't you?

The good news is that all the resting has had a wonderful effect.  While my voice still has a bit of that nasal quality that comes from having infected sinuses, I am breathing quite freely.  I feel rather perky for the first time in weeks, truth be told.

The bad news is that the weekend is over and tomorrow I must do things that are not at all restful.  I'm not complaining about having the last three Mondays off due to school vacation and regular storm cancellations, mind you.  But it is going to make tomorrow morning something of a shock to the system.  I have several 7th graders who need to finish their mandated Maine Educational Assessments and the 8th graders will be starting theirs at the same time.  Then there will be the regular kid-wrangling duties along with all the other stuff that comes with the job.  Parent/Teacher conferences are coming up and, while we've extended the marking period to account for all the snow days, I still need to make certain that everyone has grades recorded.  I suppose it's a good thing I've gotten all that extra rest.  I'll need to be up bright 'n early tomorrow, ready to hit the ground running.

And I'll be making it to the bed tonight.  I can't hear my Sprung Ahead alarm clock from the couch...

I think Narcotic Singles would be deep purples and blues and black. And addicting.

Nope, true narcotic singles would be bright, glow-y yellow and thick.

Good luck with your Monday. That's great that you're well rested now. I've been fighting sleep all afternoon due to the time change.

Nice! I want some of what you're taking! Not 'cause I'm sick or anything - but I could seriously use a deep sleep like that...

ahh, i'm one of those unfortunate people who fall asleep on the couch all the time. It's just so darn cozy!

Glad you're feelin' a bit better.

I hate daylight savings time.. its just cruel to mess with people's internal clocks like that.

Nothing wrong with sleeping on the couch. If you had gotten up to move to the bed, you might have woken up and had less sleep.

But would Narcotic Singles make you fall asleep on the couch while knitting? I hope not. Feel better. This cold/sinus infection/cough/plague/monkey pox has been going on forever.

The last time I spent the night on the couch it was because I'd knocked something back...but it surely wasn't narcotic cough syrup.

Sometimes you just gotta sleep.

Only some of my clocks have sprung forward. I know that I certainly haven't (slug mode).
