I Knit Not

I did not knit today.  I suppose that, technically, the day is not over and that knitting is still possible.  But, as of this writing, there has been no knitting.

What with it being a Monday and all, one could forgive the lack of knitting during the day.  I do have to work in order to earn my meager living so I should really be focused on that for at least part of the time.  I used to be able to squeak in a row or two during lunch.  But, with the recent changes in my schedule, I no longer have those precious twenty minutes and daytime knitting is out the window.

Besides, there was waaaaay too much of the angst going on around the old school today for good knitting to happen.  The low student enrollments and sweeping budget cuts are starting to take their toll.  Answering the inter-office phones or going to any sort of meeting could easily result in hearing that your services will no longer be required come September.  So far, I'm pretty safe and don't see any job loss in my future.  No one else would want my job anyway.  But there is a certain chill in the air these days and people are treading lightly.  Add to that the recent announcement of who will be replacing our principal next year upon his retirement and you have a powder keg just waiting to make blowy-uppy noises very, very soon.

Too grim for knitting.  The stitches would be all tight and anxious.  Any sock knit under these conditions would never fit my foot.  I could probably use them to roll quarters.  But not to put on my feet.

I often knit whilst riding the exercise bike in the afternoon.  That is a great way to get in an hour's worth of string wrangling.  I was sort of looking forward to that.  And by, "sort of" I mean that it would be fun if you took the exercise part out of it.  But, I was still gonna do it, by gum!

Except that I spent the entire hour untangling a financial snafu of epic proportions which included having to call the bank and use a calculator.  Yes.  I rode the stupid bike while I did it.  But, I did not knit.  I only have two hands and I needed both to wield the phone and the calculator.  I used my toes to shuffle through the various statements, receipts and other pieces of paper needed to navigate my way through the dollar signs.

I guess it is rather fortuitous that I have discovered a hole in the toe of yet another pair of my favorite hand knit socks.  I really need those toes for doing the higher math.

After that I was hungry.  Crunching numbers and singing along to the soothing music the bank provides to its "on hold" customers can really take it out of you.  I was maybe even a little light headed.  Instead of trying to knit at that point, it seemed best to have a little dinner.  I used one of those receipts stacked up by the phone as a napkin.  At least that way it served some sort of logical purpose.

Then I thought it might be nice to sit and stare vacantly into space for a while.  And that brings us to the here and now.  I am writing about how the universe has conspired against me and thwarted any and all knitting attempts.  I am still not knitting.  I probably will pretty soon though.  I could use some new socks.

My toes are cold and I'm tired of counting them.

Doesn't EZ have some nifty sock partial re-knit tricks? You could add a whole different sole to your sock, toes included!

If you're still looking for a fever, I'll mail you mine...I've had it for 3 weeks now, and I truly do feel it has over-stayed its welcome.

Just as long as you do not discover extra new toes, I think you are pretty safe.

Poor Sheepie. A good day you did not have. Being in a "we might downsize" environment is no fun (I've been there many a year). And add to that a financial snafu? No thank you. Can I send some Thin Mints your way?

Oh dear, and it sounds like you really need to be knitting right now. Playing with nice pretty yarn and sticks can go a long way towards soothing tired, overworked Sheepies. (And lots of other critters too!)

It does not sound like a fun day at all. But it's almost over! I hope tomorrow will be better.

Whenever I feel 'unknitty' I wind yarn. There's something very soothing about watching the swift spin around. Around and around and around and around and .. Oops, where was I?

I seem to be doing a lot of the "sit and stare vacantly" lately; not much knitting being done over here either. I'm hopeful that I'll be knitting tonight, though, it being Chicks with Sticks night and all.

Mmm hmmm... i know me somethin' about those work powder kegs.

Hang in there and don't worry about makin' the knittin' happen. It's no fun when you have to force it. Just go with the flow for a bit and see where it takes you.

I've read all my Barbara Pym (and bought the 2 I don't have on-line) during a fiber pause.

I'd send you some of my spring but it probably would just be another snowstorm by the time it reaches you.

Gorgeous merino! It almost makes me wish I kept some of the merino fleece.

Nah. I'd rather look over your shoulder.

I hope your week improves quickly. When I can't muster the energy for actual knitting I plan knitting. I look for fun patterns or I play in my stash and plan what to make with what. Or just cuddle it as the case may be.

You may not have knit with wool but you knit words wonderfully well. Now that I have finally figured out how to leave a comment, I can "de-lurk" to say thank you for all the giggles you've given me these last few weeks. The snow can't last too much longer and isn't there an Easter vacation looming?

Maybe it's just the codeine?

Oh no. No knitting and all that stress isn't good. Rest relax recharge. Hopefully today will be better.

Some days just don't have the knitting love, and they tend to be days like the one you had. Hopefully things will improve, and there will be both spring and a spring break coming soon!

I found a nice tutorial for darning http://www.hjsstudio.com/darn.html I tried it on a pair of socks and it works pretty well!
Best not knit if you're not feeling like it. Nothing worse than socks that don't fit!
