WNBP...It's All About The Random!

I've said it before and I'll say it again:  I do love Wednesday nights!  Sure, the weekend is still pretty far away and I've usually had to work all day.  But, these bullet posts surely do save me right about mid-week and that's something to smile about.  Gives me a little time to think of something better for Thursday night's post...  Here we go!

*We have pretty much run through all four seasons over the last few weeks.  We went from raging snow storms and snow drifts so high that small children were getting nosebleeds trying to scale them whilst sledding to sub-zero temps and car batteries that actually whimpered when you asked them to make the engine start.  The last couple of days have brought with them the balmy breezes of spring and I fully expect to see robins darting amongst the apple blossoms tomorrow morning.

*This is wishful thinking and I know it.  Just let me have this one moment of happy denial, 'kay?

*With the warm temperatures upon us, our intrepid school principal thought it would be a good idea to sneak in one of the state mandated fire drills today.  The kids were rather confused and required some gentle "herding" in order that they might find the exits.

*Such herding generally takes the form of verbal encouragement.  The verbal encouragement becomes downright strident after a while and, from my place in the line, I could hear several of my colleagues quite clearly in spite of the shrilling alarms, the distance between us and the shuffling feet.

*Then, from the front of the line, came the voice of Mr. Teacher Who Is Retiring This Year And Has Lost All Interest In Maintaining The Social Niceties bellowing, "I'm goin' as fast as I can!!!  Some of us are OLD you know!!!!!"

*Love that guy.  Seriously...

*You'd think that would settle things down at the back of the line.

*But The Other Mr. Teacher Who Is Retiring This Year And Never Really Cared About The Social Niceties To Begin With was back there shouting, "Well, you're s'posta be back here with the rest of us old farts!!!"

*Love that guy, too.  These are my people!!!

*We have to do the drill again.  We didn't meet the minimum time for escaping a fiery death.

*I finished up the second of my Maine Morning Mitts this afternoon during this week's last Beastly Biking session.  (I've gotten back up to just under an hour of stationary cycling time...the holidays are still hanging from my hips, you know)  I just wove in the last of the ends before sitting down to post tonight.

*Good thing because, eventually, I am going to accept the fact that spring is not coming any time soon and I will need mitts.

*I could wear them to the next fire drill...

*I'm casting on for a second pair tonight.  I still have a bunch of the Noro left over, you see.

*And I printed off the pattern for Fetching, too.

*Sorry, Trek.

*Does anyone happen to know if there is some sort of support group for Mitt Knitters?  I'm just curious.  It's not for me.  I can stop any time I want.  I just want to know for a friend, is all.

Happy Mid-Week to all and to all a good night!  As always, I hope that your Wednesday was everything it could be and more.  And that you did a better job on your fire drill than I did today.  As I'm feeling like this post was a little more "themed" than truly random, I shall leave you with this little pearl of wisdom from Max Brooks'  "The Zombie Survival Guide."  That should leave a little loose end for people to pick at for a bit...

Be Alert:  Maybe you're elated from a successful fight; maybe you're tired from days without sleep; maybe hours upon hours of fruitless searching have left you mind-numbingly bored.  For whatever reason, never let your guard down.  The undead could be anywhere, their sounds muffled, their signs ignored.  No matter how safe the area seems, be alert, be alert, be alert!

Because we need more lerts! Our last state mandated fire drill I had the pleasure of escorting an old man with mental illness off an elevator. "Sir, you can't take the elevator in a fire drill" him: "but I can't walk down steps" Me: "sir, you must get off the elevator" him" NO. I CAN'T WALK DOWN STEPS!" I had to call security and ask for help. Just one of the perks of my job, harassing old people who have mental illness.

Ah, well, at least now I can say that I am running, er, knitting with the cool kids.

I warned you about the mitt addiction. I know of no self-help group for it. If you find one let me know.

I will maintain my vigilance against the zombie horde.

Gosh, it's a really good thing that the zombies hadn't actually planned the fire drill in order to lure you all out into the open to face their wrath. As for mitt addictions, do you think it's a problem that I've just bought three skeins of yarn and two patterns all dedicated to the future making of mitts? Because I don't.

Silly - THOSE are not your peeps, WE is your peeps.

But seriously, those two dudes have short-timers' disease. I recognize it from last year when my dad spent the entire day burning his ties. He kept 1 for church and 1 to be buried in. Took him the whole day to pick 2, but what the hell? He's retired! (A retired teacher of 7th/8th/9th graders in fact).

A support group for mitt knitters? Why yes, so glad you asked! Just a moment while I step over to Ravelry....

O-tay, invitation issued. Even if it's not the "support group" you were expecting - it'll make you feel better when you see how much more obsessed one can get! *snicker*

warning, warning, that Ravelry group has got me totally sucked into the dark side. I spent 45 minutes today (while my students were taking a test) trying to downsize the Dashing pattern for D#2's tiny but elegant paws while still keeping the understated cabling. I may be officially obsessed with fingerless mitts.

This was definitely a good day for a fire drill. I had kids in class in shorts and flip flops. In January, in New England.

Monday it was 62 degrees here in Michigan! I went outside in a t-shirt. (Meanwhile, the people who went to Florids to flee the cold had 20-degree temps. [rude snerk] )

Tonight, however, 36 and mitten-wearing weather.

I am a mittaholic.
In December I knit 5 pair of mittens. Admittedly, planned, but still. Despite that, I also spontaneously started and knit two pair of Knucks (knitty.com). Both without even knowing for whom I was knitting them when I cast on!
Any second now I'm going to make mitts for two friends, both of whom complain of cold hands.
And I "neeeeeed" another pair myself.

I need to make me some mitts but I never seem to get around to it.

I had a package delivered yesterday, which I duly brought inside. I et it sit a while, though, and when I went to open it a bit later, there was a very sluggish yellow jacket on top of it. Yellow jacket outside, no problem. Yellow jacket inside? Very, very dead.

Actually, given the way it was shuffling, I think it may have been a living dead wasp to begin with.

I'm very impressed that you bike for that long. I finally got my bike back out today and only biked for 20 minutes. I quit mostly because I was bored, even though I was knitting. I'm hoping to get to 30 minutes tomorrow. You're my role model!

I hope all the students appreciated the untempered humor of those two Short-Timer Teachers. I don't remember ever hearing any kind of similar joshing going on back in my fire drill days. (Humor may not yet have been invented, though.)

I'm gonna have to get a copy of that zombie survival guide.

And I love the ... "of Mr. Teacher Who Is Retiring This Year And Has Lost All Interest In Maintaining The Social Niceties"

I work at a hospital and we've got a LOT of nurses right now exhibiting the same behavior :)

I bet they were in the hallway during the fire drill....

You probably should avoid Ellen "LA Is My Beat" Bloom, then. She is the undisputed Queen of the Mitt-Addicted (and the person whose license plate says Crochet). At SnB yesterday, a pair of mitts was made by Dim Sum Mary. They are everywhere--I might even need to whomp me up a pair or two.
We had a fire drill at the Courthouse...15 flights of stairs. Zombies emerged from the lowest level; they were alive when they started down...

A couple of weeks ago the Windham Independent had an article about a teacher's aide who once knit a pair of mittens for a kid who didn't have any, and then another, and now every year makes a pair for every kid in first grade. So you're low on the list of people who need mitten self-help.

Anyway, the darn things get covered in snow and then get wet and you need to wear a different pair when the first pair or two or three are drying out

OOO! We had a fire drill today too! (although today = Thurs.) So incredibly warm. I really don't get the weather. But I know that we would all die if it were real. Those kids just can't move. :) Best of luck to all of us.

well if you find a self help group be sure to let me know - I already have a pair in every colour in my wardrobe but that isn't enough is it !! ?
We could start one on Ravelry but there's probably one there already. There seems to be at least one group dedicated to every possible clique.
PS gotta love any teacher who uses the term Old Fart in the hearing of the little darlings
